Known as Part C, these plans include all of the benefits of Original Medicare and services plus more.

About Medicare Advantage Plans

Also called Medicare Advantage, Part C plans are offered through private insurance companies approved by Medicare and include managed care plans, private fee-for-service plans, and medical savings accounts. They combine the hospital and medical coverage of Part A and Part B. Most Medicare Advantage Plans include drug coverage (Part D).

Plans can also choose to cover even more benefits. For example, some plans may offer coverage for services like transportation to doctor visits, over-the-counter drugs that Part D doesn’t cover, and other health care services. You can check with a Medicare Advantage Plan before you join to find out if they offer these extras.

In general, Medicare Advantage plans require you to use doctors, hospitals, and pharmacies in their network and may not pay for services outside that network. Plans generally don’t cover medicare care outside the United States, but some plans may offer a supplemental benefit that covers emergency services while traveling outside of the US.  Monthly premium varies by plan. Depending on your Medicare Advantage plan, your out-of-pocket costs may be lower than Original Medicare.

Before you can sign up for a Medicare Advantage plan, you must be enrolled in Medicare Part A and Part B. This means you’ll pay a monthly Part B premium in addition to your Medicare Advantage plan’s monthly premium, coinsurance, and deductibles.
